January 27 “State of the County” Address

The Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Coffee Connection featuring the “State of the County” Address on Thursday, January 27, 2011 from 7:45-9:00 a.m. at the Huntingdon Country Club.

Huntingdon County Commissioners Connie Kough Pittenger and William Hoover will update attendees on Huntingdon County activities and plans. Commissioner Dean Fluke has not confirmed his participation. A brief question and answer period will follow the Commissioners’ remarks.

This Coffee Connection is sponsored by Penn Highlands Community College. PHCC President, Dr. Walter Asonevich will give a brief update on the Huntingdon County Campus.

JC Blair Company Care Business After Hours

The Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce is hosting its first Business After Hours event of 2011 at J. C. Blair Memorial Hospital as they offer a look into their new Company Care Occupational Health Program which is a comprehensive occupational health program offered to all area employers. The program is designed to give employers more control over workers’ compensation costs and help ensure that minimal employee time is lost. They also offer a variety of employee health services to keep your workforce healthy.

The reception will be held in History Hall with refreshments, displays and literature. Attendees will be taken into the Company Care department which is in the Wound Healing Center. There will be door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Special arrangements are being made for parking and where to enter for the event.

Preserving Old Houses: A Timely Idea

A workshop on “Preserving Old Houses” is being organized by the Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce Main Street/Community Improvement Committee in cooperation with the Huntingdon County Historical Society and Huntingdon County Planning and Development Department. Scheduled for February 9, 2011 at 6:30 PM, the workshop will focus on the conservation of older homes and the preservation of design elements which enhance the value of these homes. According to Main Street /Community Improvement Committee Chair, Richard Stahl, the workshop should be valuable to building contractors and home owners, particularly those planning major home remodeling projects.

Speakers will include Bryan Van Sweden, with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Glenn Vernon, Architect with Albertin-Vernon Architects LLC and Richard Stahl, Huntingdon County Planning Director. “The Rehab Guide,” a resource for guidance on rehabilitating old houses will be available for purchase at the workshop.

Some of the topics to be covered at the workshop include: What are the Secretary of Interior Standards for Rehabilitation? What effect does listing on the National Register of Historic Places have on housing rehabilitation activities? What are the best techniques for preserving and restoring old windows and doors without damaging the character of the home? Is sand blasting old brick walls a good idea? Why bother to preserve on old house?

The $6.00 registration covers workshop materials and light refreshments. The workshop will be held at the Exhibit Gallery at the corner of 4^th and Allegheny Streets in Huntingdon. Commissioners Sign Leadership Agreement

On November 16, 2010 the Huntingdon County Commissioners signed a Memorandum of Understanding effectively transferring administration of Leadership Huntingdon County to the Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce. The MOU was approved by the Chamber, Chamber Foundation and Leadership Steering Committee in addition to the Commissioners.

Nominations Sought for 2010 Community Improvement Awards

Nominations are being sought for the sixth annual Huntingdon County Community Improvement Award, recognizing excellence in development. Eligible for the award are new construction or substantial rehabilitation of buildings, subdivisions and land developments. Projects nominated may be residential, commercial or public/non-profit. The award is jointly sponsored by the Huntingdon County Planning Commission and the Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce, with financial support from Kish Bank.

Previous award winners include Allegrippis Trails, Stone Church of the Brethren, Huntingdon Chapter Habitat for Humanity, Greater Broad Top Park and Recreation Association, and Standing Stone Coffee Company.

The award program seeks to recognize excellence in development based on both visual or design elements and environmental impact of the project. Judges will focus on enhancement of the attractiveness of Huntingdon County, compatibility with the site and environment, creativity in design, innovation, and enhancement in the quality of life. Finally, projects will be rated on the basis of environmental impact.

Key points missing from current unemployment compensation debate
